Cape Town - Air Mercy Services personnel were airlifting a man to safety on Wednesday afternoon after he spent the night on a cliff near Gordon's Bay.

He was flung from his vehicle when it left the Rooi Els road on Tuesday night.

The vehicle crashed into the ocean, but he landed on the downhill slope above the water.

"An adult male was flung from his bakkie last night when it left the Rooi Els road near Gordons Bay," Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert Daniels said.

"The vehicle landed in the ocean and the driver on the downhill slope above it. Western Cape Government Health Emergency Medical Services are currently making use of our AMS helicopter to bring the critically injured survivor to safety."
