Cape Town - On Friday, Inspecting Judge (IJ), Justice Johann van der Westhuizen, did an oversight visit to the Goodwood Correctional Centre.

The visit was part of his mandatory programme to inspect and visit correctional centres as head of the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Centres (JICS).

He also visited Voorberg Correctional Centre near Picketberg on Thursday. Van der Westhuizen's inspections contribute to the recommendations and reports given to the Minister of Justice on a quarterly basis as well as to the Portfolio Committee annually.

At Goodwood Correctional Centre, several incidents were mentioned including two inmates that had made a weapon and had attempted to stab another, the very morning of the inspection. Their efforts were thwarted by a vigilant DCS officer.

Another incident which had taken place recently which also deserves mention is the case of two correctional centre officials who assisted in the arrest of a fellow official who was bringing in contraband into the centre. Due to their vigilance the contraband was confiscated and legal proceedings have begun.

JICS has said it would continue to follow its mandate to ensure that the dignity of all, inside correctional centres is upheld. The IJ will also be visiting centres in other provinces within the next few weeks. These will give an opportunity for further recommendations, to resolve any outstanding complaints and to build working relationships at ground level to assist the Independent Correctional Centre Visitors to carry out the JICS mandate.
