Cape Town - The City of Cape Town's mayco member for Safety and Security, JP Smith confirmed they were executing an eviction order at the Boston Centre in Bellville on Tuesday.

A large number of people are being evicted from the 10-storey building situated in Voortrekker Road.

The building once also housed the Home Affairs offices in Bellville.

"I can confirm that we are assisting, the process is still on the go as we are talking, just confirmed with staff on site," Smith said.

"Our staff have been on site since 5am this morning and still there, I verified this with the senior of our problem building unit.

"City's Environmental Health Service are also involved as the building had become very unsafe and a serious health hazard."

Boston Centre was built in the early 1970s but has degenerated over the years to such a degree that the outside mezzanine level was simply turned into a dump site.
