Cape Town - The Table Mountain Cableway athletic challenge gets underway on Saturday and will run until Sunday. The event is a charity fundraising event that aims to raise over R1 million for various local charities around Cape Town.

The Table Mountain Cableway Challenge will see 199 athletes competing and attempting to run the 5.5km length up the mountain as many times as they can in 12 hours.

The Cable Car will be on hand to bring runners back down to the bottom so that they can start again.

This year’s event will follow the same format as last year where changes were made due to the pandemic. Last year’s virtual event raised just over R1 million with the hopes of improving that this year.

The initiative was started by the Just Do It (JDI) Foundation and first took place in 2009. It has since raised over R9 million rand for various charities around Cape Town.

“JDI Foundation volunteers have been hard at work to make sure that the effort athletes put in translates into charitable programmes that uplift children and communities.

“We thank our sponsors, especially the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC), and wish all athletes well and most importantly hope that they have a fantastic time tackling the most iconic landmark of South Africa,” said Anton de Waal from the JDI Foundation Trust.

“The Cableway Charity Challenge demonstrates how we can collectively bring meaningful change to communities in need. We’re thrilled to be back this year and we’re revved for another opportunity to work with the JDI Foundation,” said Giselle Esau, representative of the TMACC.

Proceeds from the 2022 edition of the Challenge will be handed over to Nature Connect, Home from Home, and Ons Plek. 10% of the proceeds will go to Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR). For more information or to sponsor an athlete, visit https://charitychallenge.co.za/
