Cape Town - The police were investigating a crash that left an elderly pedestrian dead on Monday morning.

Cape Town Traffic spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout said an elderly man was killed in what appears to have been a hit-and-run incident.

"There was a pedestrian fatality at about 9.40am close to the Vasco Boulevard Solly Schmidt intersection. Both lanes in the direction of the N1 have been closed," she said. "An elderly male was fatally wounded."

The road was later reopened.

"Goodwood SAPS is investigating," Bezuidenhout said.

In a separate crash involving a truck and a car left an elderly woman dead. The driver of the truck escaped injury.

"A woman, believed to be in her 70s, was killed this morning when a truck crashed into her light motor vehicle at the R44 and Anandale Road intersection in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape," ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

"ER24 paramedics, along with the Metro and Fire Services, arrived on the scene to find the light motor vehicle lying on its side against the traffic light. The body of an elderly woman was found lying partially beneath the overturned vehicle.

"Paramedics quickly assessed the woman and found that she had sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for her and she was declared dead.

"The driver of the truck was assessed and found to have escaped injury.

"The local authorities were on the scene for further investigations."
