Cape Town -  We’ve had a couple of social media challenges in past years that have rocked the Internet. Now, only two weeks into the New Year, we have one that thousands of people around the world – including celebrities, politicians and just about every colleague, friend and neighbour of yours – are participating in; the “#10YearChallenge”.

Global media intelligence company, Meltwater, reported that in the last week on social media, there have been over 160 000 mentions of the hashtag “#10YearChallenge”. It’s taken over Twitter, Instagram and Facebook feeds which have been flooded with the hashtag.

The trend has people sharing a picture of them ten years ago next to a recent one, to show how far they’ve come.

By analysing the media exposure of the trend, data showed  that the #10YearChallenge experienced a spike in mentions on Wednesday, 16 January. The trend has also actually only been around for the last seven days – and in that time has racked up over 40 000 mentions in the news and over 160 000 mentions on social media.

In one week, the hashtag has been used by everyone from Trevor Noah to Caitlyn Jenner.

Trevor posted a picture of himself in a clashing tee with cartoon print, next to a smouldering red-carpet picture in a Gucci suit and lapel pin. Typically, the witty comedian we all know and love commented, “As you can see, my style hasn’t changed at all over the last decade.”

Caitlyn said to her fans, “Now THAT is a #10YearChallenge. Be authentic to yourself,” as she posted a picture of herself as pre-transition ten years ago and today. Her fans responded by the thousand, illustrating how inspirational she has been to so many.

Meltwater also analysed the trends surrounding the popular hashtag, “#10YearChallenge.” Some of the terms that appeared most commonly with the hashtag were:
  • “Glow Up:” Urban Dictionary describes “glow up” as an “incredible transformation” or “to go from the bottom to the top to a point of disbelief.”
  • “Facial recognition:” As seemingly everyone on social media was taking part in the challenge, some articles began questioning whether it was really an attempt by Facebook to get easy data for facial recognition programmes. Facebook replied by saying that the trend was completely user-generated and was not started by the tech giant.
