Cape Town - Authorities are investigating the events leading up to the death of a young man who had been working on a ship docked at Cape Town Harbour.

It's believed the man was working in the hold of the ship when a heavy metal object fell from a height, striking him against the head.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said it's believed the man was in his 20s.

"ER24 paramedics, along with Community Medics, arrived on the scene at 13h24 and were led into the hold where they found the patient," Meiring said.

"Upon assessment, paramedics found that the man had sustained a serious head injury and showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for him and he was declared dead.

"It is understood that a metal object had fallen from a height, striking the man on the head," he said.

"Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations."
