South Africa faces major challenges of job losses coupled with an increase in the cost of living due to a hike in fuel prices and VAT.

A responsible government should use this opportunity to lead by example.

Unfortunately, the ANC under the leadership of Cyril Ramaphosa is continuing where Zuma left off. It was revealed that over R500 000 was spent by the Department of Public Works on building braais for ministerial homes. The department later commented that “the department was forced to rent portable movable braai facilities on requests from clients every time there was a need”. The department also spent R30 million on five homes.

While the ANC buys new luxury homes for ministers, a responsible leader, Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga sold his R5m home to build RDP homes for the poor. How is it possible that in a country with nearly 10 million unemployed, government is more concerned with entertainment needs?

Ramaphosa has the power to stop this, but he continues to drag his feet to ensure his friends live in the lap of luxury.
