Police honour a young constable
SUTHERLAND police officers are to take part in a wreath-laying ceremony and a special “police run” from Hardie Farm to the police station to commemorate the death of Constable Jacob Boleme, killed a year ago.
Tomorrow police will remember the day Boleme, 27, died when he was shot by French couple Philippe Meniére and Agnes Jardel on Hardie Farm.
Warrant Officer Glenwall du Toit, 42, was wounded in the back.
Captain Zaki van Wyk, the Sutherland police station commissioner, said that in the days that followed the shooting of the officers, residents said they were scared.
“I was also scared, because we did not know who these people were targeting, whether they were after police officers and when they would come to my house. But after the incident it went quiet here again.”
Van Wyk said that the police run would start at around 7am. Three officers would run the complete route of about 20km, while others would run relays on the route.
“We think of it as our members who run for their lives,” Van Wyk said. “We’re commemorating the day – we’re not going to forget, we can’t forget.”
