Powerboating legend Peter Lindenberg, a 15-times South African champion, is fighting for his life after a horrific crash at the Saldanha Formula 1 Grand Prix in the Western Cape on Saturday.

He was taken to hospital in Vredenburg in a critical condition and was due to be airlifted to the Milnerton Mediclinic in Cape Town.

The crash apparently happened when Lindenberg was racing neck-and-neck with close rival Mark Shepherd, crashed and became trapped under his boat.

Lindenberg was leading the current powerboat championship before the Saldanha event, which he has won on all three previous occasions it has been held.
