Western Province on Monday announced that they had signed up Sharks openside flank Luke Watson for next season.

Having actively sought a move to Cape Town, Watson gave the following reasons for his move: "I have enjoyed some of my rugby in Durban but I am attracted to the Stormers and Western Province by their expressive style of rugby, their vision and their potential to win trophies."

"I am grateful to the Sharks for their efforts to keep me in the province. However, I haven't moved for financial gain. Suffice to say I have made financial sacrifices with this move as I believe it is in the best interests of my rugby development."

Rob Wagner, managing director of WP Rugby (Pty) Ltd, expressed his delight with the signing. "Luke is a dynamic young player and an important addition to some of the country's most prominent loose forwards already signed by WP Rugby," he said.

"His approach to WP Rugby for a move to the Cape and his desire to play for the Stormers and the blue and white hoops of WP is a welcome attitude. He adds depth and talent to our current signings in these positions, strengthening and bolstering our status in this important facet of the modern game.

"Luke's style of play is very complementary to the WP and Stormers style of play. We are certain he is capable of making a big contribution." - Sapa
