Nelson Mandela's office say the anti-apartheid icon won't be receiving visitors during the World Cup.

In a statement Thursday, the Nelson Mandela Foundation said they had been "inundated with requests for meetings, and it will be impossible for Mr. Mandela to accede to even a small fraction of these."

While his diary was closed for the duration of the World Cup, the foundation said the 91 year old "remains in good health".

Mandela has an invitation to Friday's opening game, and local organisers say his appearance will be dependent upon how he feels on the day. - Sapa-AP
