Sharks prop Jannie du Plessis was one of the first people at the scene after Brumbies lock Shawn Mackay was hit by a car outside a Durban nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Du Plessis, who is a qualified doctor, rushed to aid Mackay at the scene of the accident outside Clapham Grand nightclub in Umgeni Road, and helped put him into the "recovery position" before paramedics arrived.

"I was one of the first at the scene," Du Plessis said. "I was going to take a few of the Brumbies players back to where they were staying, when the accident occurred.

"I immediately rushed to the scene and I knew he was in trouble. We put him into the recovery position and did what we could to help him breathe. I also got hold of the emergency services and they arrived quickly and stabilised him before transferring him to St Augustine's hospital.

"They were just brilliant. I think without the efficient work of the paramedics it could have been a lot worse and so credit must go to them."
