Olympic governing body Sascoc welcomed on Monday the appointment of former deputy police minister Fikile Mbalula as the new sport minister after a cabinet reshuffle was announced at the weekend.

“We welcome Minister Mbalula and as the country's sports movement we stand ready to carry out his wishes and dreams of making South Africa a sporting nation that will be respected globally,” Sascoc president Gideon Sam said in a statement.

He thanked ousted Makhenkesi Stofile for his “enormous contribution” to sport.

“We must thank Minister Stofile for his enormous contribution to sport as well as his guidance down the years. We also hope that his vast sporting knowledge will not be lost to the country and can still be utilised in some form.

“For now though, the 2012 Olympics in London get ever closer and Minister Mbalula will be a key part of our drive for success in this regard,” said Sam. – Sapa
