Former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar has been fired as coach of PSL outfit SuperSport United, according to a news report on Sunday.

Supersport chairman Khulu Sibiya told the City Press newspaper: "Bruce was asked to leave because he has let the club down by failing to find a winning combination."

Former South African striker and SuperSport player-coach Pitso Mosimane has taken over the reins in a temporary capacity. But National Olympic coach Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba apparently tops the team's wanted list.

Since saving SuperSport from relegation two seasons ago, Grobbelaar has made little impact and recent four-goal drubbings in premiership and League Cup matches spelt the end.

Born in South Africa, Grobbelaar played for Zimbabwe before joining Liverpool in the early 1980s, and the flamboyant character won many English and European honours. - Sapa-AFP
