Manchester, England - Manchester United goalkeeper Raimond van der Gouw eased the club's goalkeeping crisis on Friday by saying he hoped to be fit to face archrivals Liverpool on Saturday.

The Dutchman, who has been sidelined since mid-February with a knee injury, insisted he would definitely be ready to play in United's Champions League quarterfinal clash with Bayern Munich on April 3.

But with first choice Fabien Barthez currently recovering from a thigh injury, 38-year-old Van der Gouw is keen to prove his fitness in Saturday's premier league clash at Anfield.

He said: "When we made the appointment for surgery, our target was the Liverpool game and at the moment everything is going the right way.

"I started training with Tony Coton last Monday and it's going very well. I have no problems and hope I will be fit for Liverpool - otherwise I will be fit for Tuesday."

United's goalkeeping problems led them to sign former Scottish international Andy Goram from Motherwell last week.

But with Alex Ferguson's top two goalkeepers on the verge of returning to action, the 36-year-old looks like facing a further wait to make his United debut. - Reuters
