Cape Town - Two people were killed in separate shooting incidents in Hanover Park, while three policemen and another resident were wounded when they came under fire in the same area.

Police spokesperson Andrè Traut said: “On Saturday at around 5.30pm while police members reacted to shooting incidents which occurred earlier in the Hanover Park area they came under fire. Three SAPS constables were wounded and admitted to hospital.

"At around 3.45pm a 30-year-old male was shot and killed in Garda Place, Hanover Park, and at 4pm a 32-year-old male was shot and killed in Lucern Place. The circumstances surrounding all these cases are under investigation."

Traut said there was a high police presence and additional forces were deployed as a tough approach was being applied in the area.

Community leader and chairperson of Hanover Park Civic Association Igshaan Nazier said the situation was “terrible” as gang violence continued to cripple their area.

“As residents we are tired. We have marched and done everything in our power. Gang violence keeps on escalating, gunshots are heard every minute and innocent people are affected. Our areas need serious intervention. There is not much we can do if the justice system does not play its part,” Nazier said.

Meanwhile, police said eight people arrested at the Huguenot tunnel are not connected to the killing of 11 people in Marikana, after initially saying they were. Residents in Marikana are abandoning their homes as they fear suspects who are still at large might start killing again.

“Additional police were deployed in the area but people still feel unsafe .We heard there were people in custody, but until they are all apprehended and charged with murder, residents will remain agitated,” Marikana community leader Joseph Makeleni said.

A memorial service for the 11 people will be held on Tuesday evening in Marikana. Details of the services are yet to be announced.
