Cape Town - More than 100 mourners gathered at the Ntlanganiso High School hall in Site C, Khayelitsha, on Wednesday night to bid farewell to Aviwe Jam Jam.

Jam Jam, a mother of a two-year-old son, was found murdered on July 29 after she had gone missing.

The police informed her family of her death on the eve of Women's Day. 

Mourners gathered to pay tribute to the "gentle" woman at the school hall a stone's throw away from her home.

On Friday, her family will be taking her body to the Eastern Cape where she will be buried.

Friends and colleagues asked Jam Jam's mother to take care of her little boy.

The father of the child, Linda Ntula, Jam Jam's boyfriend, remains in police custody before his next court appearance on September 8, on a charge of attempted murder on the life of Jam Jam's stepfather.

Jam Jam's colleague, Alicia Tyhubeni said: "Aviwe was strong, faced her own challenges. Let's not judge her."

It's believed Jam Jam was in an abusive relationship with Ntula.

Khayelitsha Cluster Commander Johannes Brandt said local police receive eight domestic violence complaints a day. Brandt urged victims of domestic violence not to withdraw cases.

Jam Jam's funeral will be held on Saturday.
