Take time to get out and savour our vibrant culture. Here are suggestions of things to do and places to visit:

Now on is a photographic exhibition, Kewpie: Daughter of District Six, at the District Six Museum Homecoming Centre on Buitenkant Street in central Cape Town.

Kewpie was a famously fabulous hairstylist and drag artist from District Six. This exhibition is a collection of snapshots celebrating the rich diversity of the District. The exhibition will run until January 18.

V&A Expressions of Heritage is an event taking place at the Waterfront this Sunday.

From 5pm to 9pm, the Silo District will offer a sensory feast of creativity and art, several genres of live music, choirs, dancing, screenings of local movies and documentaries, roaming characters, fire-breathing poi dances,buskers and comedians. There will be a giant screen and two large stages, and food trucks serving South African favourites.

Southern Guild will host a special Curator Walkabout on the evening before Heritage Day, this Sunday, in Silo 5, Silo District, V&A Waterfront. For more info: southernguild.co.za

Artscape Theatre Centre’s 2018 Heritage Festival will run until September 29, celebrating diverse cultures and identities through indigenous, contemporary and international dance, music and jazz.

The festival emphasises the need for South Africans to celebrate unity in diversity, through promoting social cohesion and inclusivity of our unique, colourful cultural heritage.

Catch Dizu Plaatjies in concert with Zinzi Nogavu at Artscape Theatre Centre from September 26 to 29 in the Artscape Arena. This show displays the beauty of African music through indigenous instruments along with the soulful voice of Zinzi Nogavu, performing alongside the internationally acclaimed musician and Sama-award-winning Professor Dizu (Mzikantu) Plaatjies.

They will be accompanied by UCT alumni students from the African music department at the South African Music College, where Professor Plaatjies lectures. Social issues will be addressed through music. Tickets R100, with discounts of R50 for pensioners, scholars and students, and block bookings.

Iziko Museums of South Africa (Iziko) in partnership with the HCI Foundation will host the annual in_herit FESTIVAL - a cultural programme, from September 24 to 28.

It will include walkabouts, guided tours, an exhibition opening, events, and Museum Night V&A. The programme is aligned to the national theme: “The Year of Nelson Mandela: Advancing Transformation of South Africa’s Heritage Landscape”.

Heritage Day at Iziko will be jam-packed with activities. Marine biology, micro fossils and insect displays will bring “behind-the-scenes-science” to the fore.

Guided tours of the Groot Constantia Manor House, Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum, Castle of Good Hope and Iziko South African Museum will provide new perspectives.

A drumming session; cartoon workshop; jewellery-making; mock-fossil dig; fossil casting; and painting your own masterpiece will get visitors involved.

Music and dance performances will showcase community cultural performers the Marimba Jam Trio Group, Rainbow Academy and Our Future Dance Group and local talent. Visit www.iziko.org.za for the full programme.
