Cape Town – After years of performing at big festivals and sold-out events, Tumi Morake and Ndumiso Lindi appear tonight at the Baxter in Married... But Not to Each Other.

The pair were once asked by a customs official “Are you married?” Ndumiso quickly replied “Yes” and continued “But not to each other”. And so began the comical journey for this wife and husband of other people.

Ndumiso Lindi spoke about the liaison.

What makes you tick on stage - separately and together?

Great energy coming from the audience gets me going. Being on stage is like a game of tennis, just sharing this ball of invisible energy back and forth.

Comedy is about instant gratification, those laughs charge me up. Working with Tumi, it’s always great vibes, the show starts before we even get on stage. It’s laughs and roasting each other during the day so by the time we’re on stage we’re warmed up and ready for the laugh roller coaster.

Describe your brand of humour.

I’m more of a storyteller. I do observational comedy, talk about things that people can relate too but take for granted sometimes.

What gets people rolling with laughter in the aisles?

Its the truth in the subject. Because they can relate to what we’re talking about and in their minds they’re asking themselves how did they miss that. It’s like we teleport an audience member back to that moment they experienced what we’re talking about. Also it’s the magic combination of delivery and timing.

More on your work relationship - a look behind the scenes?

We roast each other a lot and we don’t take each other so seriously. Then a few minutes before we get on stage that’s when we get in the zone, give each other space and pray before the fun.

Would you say laughter really is the best medicine?

Always. It’s been proven that laughter decreases stress hormones and triggers the release of endorphins.

What can the audience expect at your show?

It’s a great date night filled with laughter and in some cases knowledge. This is a show for everyone. Whether you’re married or single, you will find something that speaks to you.

Married But Not To Each Other is at the Baxter Concert Hall tonight at 8.15pm. It carries a PG16 age restriction. Tickets available from WebTickets.
