THE Isango Ensemble is currently on show at the District Six Museum until Saturday. Their production, A Man of Good Hope, is based on Jonny Steinberg’s book. The work has been adapted by the ensemble, and directed by Mark Dornford-May.
London’s The Young Vic has teamed up with the Royal Opera House and Isango Ensemble for a musical inspired by one refugee’s true life story. It follows a young Somalian who heads here to seek new opportunities. But as he arrives, xenophobic violence erupts, sending his plans into chaos.
After years in a refugee camp and learning to hustle in the streets of Ethiopia, Asad sets off for SA. But when he discovers the violent reality of life in the townships – and his adventures begin. Performed mainly through music, this stage adaptation features marimbas and vocals by a 23-strong ensemble. The company is made up of classically trained and untrained singers from Cape Town townships.
The first collaboration between The Young Vic and The Royal Opera, A Man of Good Hope is receiving its world premiere at The District Six Museum. The conductor is Mandisi Dyantyis, musical direction is by Mandisi Dyantyis and Pauline Malefane, and movement is by Lungelo Ngamlana. Lighting is by Mannie Manim.
Its UK premier at The Young Vic is in October.
