Cape Town - The two alleged extortionists arrested over the kidnapping of a Chinese national in Strand allegedly demanded a ransom amount of R20m, the Strand Magistrate’s Court head on Monday.

Mawande Jabavu of Nomzamo, Strand, and Ayanda Morosi of Makhaza, Khayelitsha have been charged with the kidnapping of Shaqtung Ye and extortion.

The court heard that they allegedly kidnapped Shaqtung near Panorama Building, Strand, June 21 after forcing him into a vehicle and drove out of Strand.

Provincial organised crime detectives, as part of their investigations into the case, followed information on the whereabouts of the kidnapping victim.

“An integrated team comprising the National Intervention Unit, Special Task Force, Crime Intelligence and detectives later descended on a shack in Makhaza, Khayelitsha, on Thursday afternoon where they rescued the victim,” said police spokesperson Novela Potelwa.

“He had sustained serious burns and assault wounds after he was tortured by his kidnappers. The victim, aged 47, is currently in hospital.”

Their case has been adjourned until July 5 for bail application.
