Cape Town – Police in Philippi are investigating a case of attempted murder after residents

allegedly attacked two suspected thieves.

The men, both aged 25, were attacked on Tuesday after they were accused by residents of stealing.

Police responded to a call from the community after 10.30am and found residents beating up the suspected thieves.

Police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana said they are “working

tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to book”.

“Police detectives are following up on leads to arrest those responsible. Both victims were transported to a hospital for treatment,” she said.

Community Policing Forum chairperson Neo Motinyane condemned the attack.

“As the CPF, we don’t condone any criminal activity in our community nor do we encourage any acts of vigilantism, because taking the law into your own hands subjects one to prosecution and conviction,” he warned.

Motinyane also warned those involved that if found guilty, they could face dire consequences.
