CAPE TOWN - An armed suspected robber was cornered and subsequently arrested after a dramatic high-speed chase that saw his accomplices abandoning their getaway vehicle and fleeing on foot in Strand.

The 37-year-old suspect was among 79 other arrests the City’s metro police were involved in during patrols in the past week.

The assistance of a local private security company proved vital in the chase, which unfolded after a liquor store was robbed in Strand Central.

Detailing the incident, the company said its units descended on the scene as the robbers pulled away in a double-cab bakkie.

“The suspects and their Christmas stock made it to Strand’s Main Road before they realised their world as they knew it would soon change as there were GBSEC units behind them.

“The pursuit continued on the N2 and turned into Nomzamo where metro police were busy with a roadblock in the road leading into the area,” said the security company.

The suspects had no choice but to “make it or break it” by driving through the roadblock with security guards following as well.

“The suspects knew they had to bail and run for it. Jumping from their moving vehicle in different directions, officer Jeffery Bowers picked his target with metro police and metro K9 members running after the other suspects.

“The stolen liquor was recovered in the vehicle and handed over to the SAPS along with a 37-year-old suspect for armed robbery and theft.”
