CAPE TOWN - Western Province Cricket Association has paid tribute to legendary ice-cream seller Moegamat “Boeta” Cassiem who passed away on Thursday after battling renal failure.

The 67-year-old worked at Newlands cricket stadium for more than 55 years and was a favourite with patrons and players alike.

“We are very emotional, everything is done, my father’s resting, we just need to make duas (prayers) for him and be there for one another,” his son Mogammad Cassiem said on Thursday.

He said the memories he would cherish most included the joy his father brought the family and the love for his sport.

Originally from Kensington, the father of four and grandfather of 12 had been living in Mitchells Plain for 30 years.

“My father loved Cape Town and Cape Town’s people, his passion and what he loved about it was being there, making Capetonions feel that they are special. The way I feel it’s like Cape Town has lost a great son today.”

The Six Gun Grill Western Province and Gbets Rocks teams stood for a minute’s silence before Thursday’s T20 practice match between the two sides at the stadium.

“Boeta Cassiem’s memory will forever be etched into the history of this famous ground. His infectious personality resonated with locals as well as international supporters and his passing will leave a huge hole in the overall match-day experience. Our sincere condolences to the family at this very sad time,” WPCA chief executive Michael Canterbury said.

Western Province Cricket Association President Ashraf Burns further thanked Cassiem for his contribution.

“Thank you Boeta Cassiem for all the special memories, you brought the heart to Newlands and we will forever remember you for your contribution. You will be dearly missed. May the Almighty grant him a high stage in paradise and grant contentment to his family and friends.”

Just a few months ago, a ceremony was held at the stadium to honour Cassiem’s service, with a permanent plaque unveiled in the Oaks Grass Embankment in his honour.

Six Gun Grill WP acting head coach Faiek Davids said: “It was a wonderful occasion when we had the opportunity to pay tribute to Boeta Cassiem earlier this year, with his loving family in attendance. Boeta Cassiem was the best brand ambassador Newlands has had or will ever have, that will forever ring true. On behalf of all the players and team management, thank you to Mr Cassiem’s family for sharing their father and grandfather with us for so many years and we wish them love and strength during this time.”
