Cape Town – Two men, two women and a 1-year-old boy died in a fire in Crossroads late last night.

The City’s Fire and Rescue Service received the emergency call at about 11.30pm, said a spokesperson. When crews from Gugulethu, Mitchells Plain and Landsdowne Road arrived on the scene, they found a double-storey house on fire in Imboniso Road.

"A search of the property led to the discovery of the bodies of a man, woman and a 1-year-old boy in the garage, and another two bodies of a man and woman in the bedroom on the ground floor.

"The fire was extinguished just before 01:00 and the entire area was cordoned off by the South African Police Service," the Fire and Rescue Service said.

Yesterday, a 7-year-old boy was killed and five people injured in a fire at an informal dwelling in Delft in the early hours of Monday.

The City's Fire and Rescue Service received an emergency call just after 1.30am, with fire crews from Belhar and Lansdowne Road responding, a spokesperson said.

"They found an informal structure on fire in Ebbehout Street and the body of a boy in one of the bedrooms. Five others were taken to hospital.

"The fire was extinguished at 2:20am before the scene was handed over to SAPS’ Forensics Unit."

According to the neighbours, the family had forgotten to turn off the paraffin heater.
