Cape Town – The 27-year-old man accused of killing his girlfriend, Vuyokazi Dzoyi, abandoned his bail application yesterday in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court.

Masixole Zweni made his second court appearance after he was arrested shortly after he allegedly stabbed Dzoyi in the left arm, below the breast, and on her side while she was on her way to Vangate Mall.

She died in hospital of her injuries.

According to the family, a witness chased after the suspect, caught him and handed him over to police. Dzoyi’s brother, Mandla, said the family was pleased with Zweni’s decision to not seek bail.

According to him, Zweni would appear again on March 27.

“It would kill us to see him walking around as if nothing happened. We see murderers walk free so often and this time my family won’t take that,” he said.

Langa community policing forum (CPF) chairperson Zanele Mbizela said residents were relieved that Zweni abandoned bail and that murderers had no place in the community.

“This means he understands the fury of the community. He has not shown remorse for what he did.”

The community would be supporting the family throughout the court process, she said, adding that heavy sentences should be meted out to perpetrators of gender-based violence to send a message to others.
