Cape Town - Delft, Harare, Mfuleni and Gugulethu police stations reported the most sexual offences per station in the Western Cape between January 2021 and March 2022.

In a written reply to the ANC’s Gladys Bakubaku-Vos, Western Cape Community Safety MEC Reagan Allen said the department was in the process of monitoring the level of compliance of SAPS specialised units dealing with sexual offence cases, namely the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) units.

The latest crime stats, released in early June, showed an increase in murder and rape cases between January and March, 2022.

Murder increased by 22.2% from 4 976 in the same period last year to 6 083 in 2022. Rape also shot up by 13.7% to 10 818 during the first three months of this year.

The total number of sexual offences reports per station between January 2021 and March 2022 are made up of rape, sexual assault, contact sexual offences, and attempt sexual offences.

The breakdown of the 10 stations with the most reported sexual offences per station were:

  • Harare, 329
  • Mfuleni, 265
  • Gugulethu, 256
  • Nyanga, 244
  • Kraaifontein, 240
  • Mitchells Plain, 212
  • Khayelitsha, 204
  • Knysna, 195
  • Thembalethu, 163

“The department’s focus is on monitoring SAPS with the Domestic Violence Act, and in doing so, priority is given to monitoring police stations that fall in the top 50 police stations in terms of domestic violence incidents reported,” Allen said.
