CAPE TOWN - The Brackenfell police officer accused of raping a 26-year-old woman was admitted to a medical facility on Monday– hours before we was expected in court, after he apparently fell sick at the weekend.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) arrested the man on Friday – the day he returned back from a short trip outside the province.

The officer, whose identity is now known by the Cape Times, was expected to make his first court appearance at the Bluedowns Magistrate’s Court on Monday, but fell ill on Sunday night, a source said.

Ipid spokesperson Grace Langa said the accused was admitted to hospital and the matter was postponed.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said the case was received yesterday but the accused was still in hospital.

“The case (was) postponed in his absence until January 24 for the accused to appear in court in person.”

EFF Cape Metro spokesperson, Andiswa Madikazi, said the party’s GBV desk went to court, but could not see the suspect’s name on the court roll.

“They could not find anything in court that stated he was appearing and the desk also did not know who to ask.

“I called the woman who informed me that she was updated that the man could not appear due to his health,” said Madikazi.

The 26-year-old survivor had last weekend attempted to report an assault case against her partner who allegedly hit her with a bottle, but was allegedly not assisted at the police station and went back home.

Another altercation happened, after which she called the police and the arrested SAPS officer and his colleague attended.

The cop apparently suggested that they take her to sleep at the friend’s place for safety reasons.

According to a friend of the survivor, the accused police officer allegedly insisted that his colleague remain at the police station because he would drive the woman to the friend’s place.

However, he instead drove near the Stellenbosch intersection where he allegedly raped her and threatened to kill her.
