THE DA has called on ANC leader in the Western Cape, Cameron Dugmore to “break his silence” on the allegations of corruption against ANC MPL Danville Smith.
Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani said Smith appeared at the Bellville specialised commercial crimes court on April 9 and was released on warning. He is due to return to court on May 19.
DA acting provincial leader, Albert Fritz has called on Dugmore to put his “money where his mouth is” and comment on the possible stepping aside of Smith.
“Smith, the then Speaker of the Cederberg Municipality, is being accused of corruption with relation to food parcels that were supposed to be delivered on Mandela Day in 2016 but never were,” he said.
“We call on Cameron Dugmore to explain why Mr Smith has not yet stepped down and why implicated individuals are allowed to ignore the NEC resolution. As someone who easily alludes to the faults and double standards of others, we demand that Dugmore break his apparent silence on the matter,” he said.
In response, Dugmore said the ANC in the Western Cape was dealing with the implementation of the step-aside resolution in the province, and all party members including public representatives, were subjected to the resolution “without fear or favour”.
“I will be in a position to comment further on this matter once the (interim provincial committee) IPC process has been completed,” he said.
