Cape Town - SOUTH African rap-rave band Die Antwoord will play themselves in a science-fiction movie to be filmed in Johannesburg in September.

Director Neill Blomkamp had chosen Die Antwoord to act in his film Chappie which has a budget of R460 million, entertainment news channel Channel 24 reported. Blomkamp had directed District 9 which was released in 2010 after also having been filmed in Gauteng. The production of Chappie was announced two years ago, but the movie’s plot was a secret.

Die Antwoord member Ninja had confirmed they would play in Chappie after fellow band member Yo-landi had included the words “Neill Blomkamp’s making a movie about me” when she sang their song Baby’s on Fire last year.

District 9 was nominated for four Academy Awards which included best visual effects and best picture. In the movie South African actor Sharlto Copley played the role of Wikus van de Merwe, an Afrikaner bureaucrat tasked with relocating extraterrestrial creatures that had landed on Earth. His job was to relocate them from a military protected slum in Johannesburg to a camp outside the city. District 9 was inspired by forced removals that took place in District Six. – Staff writer
