Eastern Cape woman arrested after child is found strangled on the beach

CAPE TOWN - A 25-year-old woman is expected to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on allegations that she strangled her boyfriend's daughter.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said its alleged that the 25-year-old woman had fetched the nine-year-old child at the boyfriend’s house in Bethelsdorp to take her for a haircut on Monday.

She had then hitchhiked with the child to Maitlands Beach.

Naidu said while the child was swimming in the ocean at some time in the afternoon, she was strangled and left on the beach.

“At about 9pm the suspect went to the satellite police station in Sea View to report the incident. The body of the child was found at Maitlands Beach.

“The woman is detained on a charge of murder and the motive for the killing is not yet known.

“She is expected to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 31 March 2022,” Naidu said.
