Condolences continued pouring in to the family of Shaheed Omar, the nephew of anti-apartheid Struggle lawyer Dullah Omar, who was shot dead in his car on Thursday.

The Gatesville Mosque yesterday extended its support and condolences to the Omar family.

The funeral service for the 44-year-old investment specialist was held at the Mountview Mosque. He was buried at the Pooke Road cemetery.

Omar was shot and killed at the corner of Govan Mbeki Road and Jan Smuts Drive, on the way to his home in Mabel Road, Rylands Estate.

His death came less than a week after Dullah Omar’s widow, Farida, was honoured for her contribution to a free and just South Africa. She received the Masjidul-Quds Lifetime Community Service Award, presented by axed finance minister Pravin Gordhan.

Yesterday, Gatesville Mosque's Sataar Parker said the Omars had been touched by the overwhelming support from their community: “I personally visited the family before prayers on Friday and they were still in shock following the deplorable act that took their family member ” Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said a murder investigation was under way and no arrests had been made.
