Cape Town -

Four people escaped a fiery death when the car they were in crashed and burst into flames on Sunday .

ER24 spokeswoman Luyanda Majija said the four passengers had been rushed to hospital after their car crashed into a barrier along Marine Drive and Lower Church Street near Woodstock.

Three of the passengers managed to get themselves out of the vehicle and a motorcyclist pulled out the fourth person moments before the car burst into flames.

The driver of the car is thought to have lost control of it.

Officials yesterday would not release the names of the passengers.

Majija said three had been taken to Groote Schuur Hospital and the fourth to Somerset Hospital.

“The exact cause of the accident is under investigation,” he said.

Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Toivo Nqwebo said a fire engine and a specialised rescue vehicle had gone to the scene.

“Firefighters in the specialised vehicle are medically trained to deal with patients,” Nqwebosaid, as they were often the first to reach the scene.

Nqwebo said three lanes along the N1 had been closed while officials were at the scene.

Police spokesman FC van Wyk said an accident docket had been opened.
