#FREESPACE: Zeitz Museum exhibition on human space, imaginary futures

Cape Town – Urban debate around the resource of space in a post-apartheid Cape Town will be front and centre at the month-long event titled #FREESPACE at the V&A Silo District.

Hosted at the Zeitz Museum Of Contemporary African Art (MOCAA) from January 17 until February 17, South African and international audience the opportunity to put the notion of public space in the spotlight 

Talks, debate and performance will provide attendees the opportunity to engage with the concept of space from a cultural, architectural, urban and personal perspective.

Co-curator of the event Caroline Sohie said: “The physical translation of a temporary #FREESPACE territory in Cape Town will create a powerful statement, a symbolic narrative of memory, inscribed in the city fabric. 

"Ultimately, the project intends to lead to thought-provoking expression, uncovering disrupting narratives, leading to a propositional debate about human space and imaginary futures.”

#FREESPACE is a project of international architecture-led interdisciplinary design practice INSTINCT, undertaken for V&A Waterfront in partnership with Zeitz MOCAA and the African Centre for Cities at UCT, with additional support of various donors.

The exhibition comprises of a range of platforms of expression, an immersive symbolic container installation including artistic interventions, a programme of wide-ranging events and an online platform to share public views.

Zeitz MOCAA event comes following South Africa’s absence from the 2018 addition of the  annual Art and Architecture festival , the Venice Biennale in Italy, which was also titled ‘FREESPACE’.

The exhibition will contain several installations including container repurposed to a wide range of uses.

Artists from diverse backgrounds and disciplines are invited for a 24-hour takeover of the container.

Zeitz MOCAA and African Centre for Cities has established a programme to provoke and

stimulate critical discussion. 

That takes on various formats of engagement, ranging from talks to panel discussions, workshops and performance.

The online platform represents a call for participation to engage the public to ‘claim space’ by

responding creatively to the central question: ‘What does FREESPACE mean for you?’
