Cape Town - French ambassador to South Africa Christophe Farnaud says his country’s aim is to build more “efficient” partnerships with African countries, in particular South Africa, that would result in economic development.

Speaking at a meeting with senior Independent Media staff on Wednesday, he said as the world economy grew, and the Brics countries become an increasingly more powerful bloc, meaningful partnerships were important to tackle common issues.

Farnaud said the French had always invested in South Africa and would continue to do so. “As partners we are here to stay. There are 400 French companies here, employing about 40 000 people,” he said.

Farnaud said South Africa was a strategic partner for France. “South Africa has the population, the economic strength and the politics. The values of Mandela are still here.”

He added that South Africa had a strong democracy. “For the last 20 years South Africa has had a solid democracy, and when you talk to companies they take into account the secure legal environment and still want to invest here.”

Farnaud said globalisation was a stark reality for all.

“It means risks and many are afraid of the changes but no one can escape the changes.”

Globalisation also brought opportunity and working together was the key to accessing that opportunity, he said.

“France wants to be more present in the international scene and we need special partners.

“South Africa is a special place.”

He said innovation in entrepreneurship was a priority and they wished to promote more co-operation in that area.

Independent Media regional executive editor for the Western Cape Gasant Abarder said he was excited about co-operation in this area.

He said with food security a major problem in South Africa, there were opportunities for entrepreneurs

and start-ups to provide

solutions.
