Police say two men, including a leader of a local gang, were “brought to book” by officers deployed in the Bishop Lavis area to combat gang violence.

Police pulled over a suspicious motor vehicle in Angela Road and arrested the two men.

“One of the suspects, a 37-year-old man, is known to SAPS members. He is the leader of a local gang and his present bail condition prohibits him from being in the Bishop Lavis precinct. He was arrested for the contravention of his bail condition,” said police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana.

She said the man’s passenger, a 29-year-old-man, was found in possession of a firearm without a licence. He was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Both men were detained at Bishop Lavis SAPS and will appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate's Court today.

“Police operations will continue in the area to ensure the safety of the community,” Rwexana said.

Meanwhile, five men were arrested yesterday. “Police were following up on a vehicle that was chased for being involved in a business robbery in Somerset.

"The members spotted the vehicle on the R44 direction to Stellenbosch. Police pulled over the vehicle and upon searching the suspects an undisclosed amount of money was found,” she said. - Staff Writer
