CAPE TOWN - A George police officer is expected to appear in the Thembalethu Magistrates Court on Monday, on charges of assault following a domestic violence incident involving his wife.

Ipid spokesperson Grace Langa said they are investigating a case of assault after they arrested the 53-year-old warrant officer on Friday.

“The victim alleges that on October 30 at 9pm she came home and found her husband having a party with his friends and he allegedly pushed her against the wall (by) her chest. (The next day) at 7am, the suspect came home and confronted the wife about her phone and in the process he punched her in the face and threw her on the ground,” said Langa.

Langa said the arrest was executed after it was approved by the senior prosecutor of George Court.

According to Langa, further information in the matter shows the suspect was previously reported for domestic violence incidents by the same victim but the cases had been withdrawn by the wife.

“(The) suspect has an IPID pending case also domestic violence related by same victim against same suspect. The victim has supplied withdrawal statement on this matter.

“(There is) also a December 2020 case, domestic violence-related by the victim against same suspect however this case was withdrawn by victim,” said Langa.

Meanwhile, disgraced rapist cop David Steenkamp, will have to wait to hear his fate as sentencing in the matter against the former Mitchells Plain police sergeant was postponed.

Steenkamp who preyed on detained inmates is expected to be sentenced on November 15 as a magistrate was not available on Friday.

After an investigation by Ipid and a trial, Steenkamp had been found guilty on one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault.

Langa said: “Steenkamp raped an inmate who was detained at Mitchell’s Plain SAPS (and was) the cell guard at the time of the incident. He was dismissed from SAPS on 18 April 2017. During investigation it became known that the complainant was not his only victim and more people came forward making the same allegations against Steenkamp.”
