THE klopse street parade is unlikely to take place this year, following its postponement in January due to Covid-19.

While the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association (KKKA) is expected to meet soon to discuss its in-house operations as the organiser of the Tweede Nuwe Jaar Street Parade, a connected source said the last decision taken was that it would not go ahead at all this year, while another source said there was still no clarity on the situation.

The decision to postpone the carnival in January was taken in light of the global Covid-19 pandemic and the national state of disaster regulations which govern the number of people at gatherings.

It was tentatively moved to June 16.

A source yesterday said they were focused on the safety of people and working to put an end to the pandemic.

The City said it has not received any permit applications for the event or its competitions for 2021.

“The City’s event permit office has not received any permit applications for these events in June,” City spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo said.

The event is traditionally held on January 2 annually, and is considered one of Cape Town’s most festive public gatherings, drawing thousands of people to the CBD.
