A City of Cape Town law enforcement officer who was recently arrested for possession of drugs worth almost R2 million, has resigned.

The 31-year-old officer, Clinton Langeveldt, has resigned from his position, the City said on Thursday.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith confirmed Langeveldt will not return to work, but added "he still faces criminal prosecution".

Langeveldt was arrested in Bellville South last week by members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) after being found in possession of 41 000 mandrax tablets valued at nearly R2 million.

The officer, who was off duty at the time of his arrest, was also in possession of his official firearm, which in itself is a breach of protocols, Smith said earlier.

"While the case is still under investigation, this is of grave concern and we will assist the Hawks where required," Smith added.
