CAPE TOWN - The lawyer arrested for allegedly being in possession of 200 mandrax tablets and tik valued at R9 600 at the Bellville Regional Court has been released on bail with strict conditions.
The National Prosecuting Authority said Lennox Pupa, of Pupa Attorneys in Litha Park, appeared at the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning where the 39-year- old father of two was granted bail of R3 000.
He was arrested last week in possession of drugs, ostensibly meant for an accused he was representing, according to police.
This was after a court orderly became suspicious when he noticed Pupa with a green plastic bag, which drew his attention.
“During the court proceedings, the lawyer was excused by the presiding magistrate due to the suspicion that he was intoxicated. As he left the court, the court orderly followed him and conducted a search which resulted in the discovery of 200 mandrax tablets and tik to the combined street value of R9 600, found in the green plastic bag he was carrying with him,” police said at the time.
As part of his bail conditions Pupa has to sign at the Lingelethu West police station on Fridays between 8am and 8pm.
His case has been postponed to December 2.
