CAPE TOWN - A Cape Flats designer has pursued her passion for fashion and started her own brand called One of a Kind.
Sophalene Mouton Papier, 27, embarked on the life-changing journey after the company she worked for closed down as a result of Covid-19 and she was left without an income.
The Elsies River resident said she made clothing part time but when her company closed she had the opportunity to pursue her passion full-time.
“Designing clothes started at the age of 7, when I started making clothes for my dolls and myself.
“The inspiration behind the name One of a Kind is because we live on the Cape Flats.
“Everyone wears the same clothes and does the same thing and we just wanted to stand out.
“We want to be more involved in the community by contributing towards the community,” said Papier.
Being invested in the community, Papier hosted her first fashion show last September to showcase her new clothing range for 2021. The fashion show took place within the community and the models were from the area.
“It was a community fashion show and a fun day. The ward 26 councillor was involved and handed out food. We got sponsors as well to donate sweets to the children.”
Pamela Eyssen is a regular customer who recalls her first time asking Papier to design her daughter's confirmation dress and has been supporting her ever since.
“I only showed her a picture of what I wanted and the dress she made was perfect.
“I am happy with the way she designs our dresses, we don't have to go back continuously for fittings, only once.”
Eyssen said the pricing was reasonable and that she only has to send a picture of the design she wants and Papier nails it.
Papier aims to host her fashion show annually in the hope of continuing to make a difference in her community.
