Police attempts to root out gang-related and violent crime in the Western Cape led to the arrest of a 30-year-old man in Bishop Lavis for the possession of firearms, explosives and ammunition on Saturday afternoon, Western Cape police said.

The intelligence-driven operation, executed by the South African Police Service (SAPS) at the suspect’s home, resulted in the seizure of two firearms – a 9mm pistol and a 7.65mm pistol –  600 grams of PE4 explosive, six detonators, one safety fuse, a variety of ammunition of different calibres, a bulletproof vest, as well as firearm maintenance equipment, Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut said.

The suspect was due to appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court on Monday on various charges against him.

The circumstances surrounding the seizure, which was regarded as a significant success, and the suspect’s involvement in violent crimes perpetrated in gang-affected areas were under investigation, Traut said.
