A TWENTY-TWO-year old man is expected to appear in court after he was arrested on Tuesday night by Metrorail’s Protection Services for vandalising a train carriage near Klapmuts station.

According to Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott the suspect was with three other accomplices when they security officers arrested him.

His accomplices managed to run away.

The man was handed over to the police, and is expected to be charged under the Criminal Matters Amendment Act.

Metrorail Cape regional manager Richard Walker congratulated the teams: ‘This is the 18th arrest in 8 weeks, proving that we are serious about reducing unbridled vandalism’.

Walker said vandalism reduced the Metrorail’s already diminished fleet further by an average of 60 – 70 carriages per month.

“Our commuters and employees suffer needlessly as a result,” added Walker.

Metrorail Protection Services teams conduct inspections and search and seize operations daily; each segment covering a targeted number of trains and stations.

They concentrate on crime prevention and Legal Succession Act infringements i.e. travelling between carriages; keeping doors open in transit, jumping in and out of moving trains, travelling with invalid tickets and fare evasion.

Metrorail offers a reward of up to R25 000 for any information leading to a conviction.
