Cape Town – More arrests in the assassination of Anti-Gang Unit investigator Charl Kinnear are on the cards, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said, as a suspect is expected in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate's Court today.

Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi said the 39-year-old was arrested in Gauteng on Wednesday.

“More arrests are not ruled out as investigations are still under way,” Mulaudzi said.

The arrest came as Kinnear’s family, friends and loved ones paid tribute during a memorial service yesterday.

Acting Bishop Lavis Community Policing Forum chairperson Amanda Davids said Kinnear was a role model.

“He was respected and his death is a great loss for all.”

The vigil was attended by several high-ranking police officials, mayor Dan Plato and other well-known individuals.

Kinnear’s eldest son Carlisle saluted his father, saying he was proud of him and that he ran his race. “What I would remember the most about my dad would be his hard work and determination, which describes him completely.”

Kinnear was the investigating officer in the extortion case against Nafiz Modack, Colin Booysen, Ashley Fields, Jacques Cronje and Carl Lakay. Last year he lodged a complaint with police watchdog Ipid, asking for urgent investigation into crimes allegedly committed by six members of the provincial crime intelligence unit who were allegedly linked to high-flying gangsters.
