CAPE TOWN - Coastu’s biggest affiliate, the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu), is heading to court to force the ANC to pay its employees’ salaries, which have been outstanding since August.

Nehawu general secretary Zola Saphetha on Tuesday announced that the union has opted to take the matter to the high court because it believes that the non-payment of ANC staff’s salaries is dishonest and a contravention of the law.

“We met our lawyers two days ago. We are finalising papers now and we will be filing those papers in the Gauteng High Court,” he said.

Saphetha revealed that in addition to the legal action, Nehawu is also trying to mobilise not only the workers of the ANC but to get solidarity support from other union members in other sectors, because an injury to one is an injury to all and the matter has been going on since 2019.

“It can’t be accepted, taking into account the fact that the ANC is the ruling party,” he said, adding that Nehawu was not ruling out further engagements with the party.

Saphetha warned that whatever the ANC does will influence the state.

“We will not fold our arms while the ANC is doing this to workers ... we will explore all avenues available at our disposal,” he vowed.

Saphetha said that just recently the ANC had been under pressure from the SA Revenue Service because of its non-compliance and on receiving money it paid the taxman at the expense of its employees.
