Cape Town - His body was almost unidentifiable. And what will make it even worse for Robert Sonnekus's family to come to terms with his death is that one of his alleged killers was out early on parole for murder.

The handcuffed 52-year-old Sun Valley resident was shot several times in the head after an apparent armed robbery. His vehicle was found stripped in Mitchells Plain and his body located at a sand mine in Macassar, four days after being reported missing by his son, Jesse Sonnekus, at the Fish Hoek police station two Sundays ago.

"The accused was out on an early parole for murder," said police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk, News24 reported.

The man was denied bail in the Simon's Town Magistrate's Court on Thursday. The case was postponed until August 31 for further investigation.

Van Wyk said three men were arrested for possession of suspected stolen property. He added that a 34-year-old man was also arrested on August 14, although he could not yet confirm whether this was on a charge of armed robbery or murder.

"At the missing person's house in Corsair (Way), Sun Valley, blood was found and two safes were found open," said Van Wyk, who added that several items were missing from the victim's house.

Jesse Sonnekus told the Cape Argus he had heard of gang involvement in his father’s killing, but Fish Hoek Community Policing Forum chairperson Andre Blom said he was not aware of gang involvement in the incident.

Blom said the incident was not a typical crime to have taken place in Fish Hoek, although crime levels were up.
