Patriotic Alliance claims first ever mayoral victory in Laingsburg Municipality

CAPE TOWN - The Laingsburg Municipality has elected Mitchell John Smith of the Patriotic Alliance (PA) as their executive mayor, making it the first ever mayor for the party.

Smith was elected at an inauguration council meeting on Monday.

PA deputy provincial leader Sammy Claassen said they were extremely proud of the “historic achievement”.

“The Patriotic Alliance made history when the Laingsburg Municipality voted for Mr Mitchell John Smith (Patriotic Alliance) as its executive mayor at its inauguration council meeting today.

“Thus making Mr Smith the first ever mayor of the Patriotic Alliance South Africa. We are extremely proud of this moment and historic achievement today. The political landscape and power in the Western Cape has shifted,”

"This shift enabled the Patriotic Alliance to lead a pro-poor coalition to better the lives of the marginalised in Central Karoo and rural Western Cape at large,” said Claassen.

Taking to social media, PA president Gayton Mckenzie said he was shedding tears of joy.

“I have only tears, I have no words, only tears and an unshakable belief that we are nothing without God, He is a promise keeper. Patriots this is the first ever mayor of the Patriotic Alliance in our history as a party.” - Media (Pty) Ltd
