THE Cape Times’s book editor, Karin Schimke, has won the 2014 Ingrid Jonker Prize for her first anthology of poetry, Bare and Breaking.

The judges said the collection was “unapologetically erotic and intimate”.

It took the reader from love and unease, through crisis and fury, to numbness and grief, and finally a fragile place of safety, the Ingrid Jonker Prize Committee said.

Schimke, who is also a journalist, said she had not expected the award, the first in her writing career

. The publisher, Modjaji Books, had submitted her work.

“I have no ambitions to win awards. This is a special award because it is named after a poet,” Schimke said after being presented with the award at the Protea Fire & Ice Hotel last night.
