Police officer in serious condition after stabbing incident in George

Cape Town - A police sergeant is in serious condition in hospital after he was stabbed by a suspect during a scuffle on Saturday in George.

The police sergeant stationed in Conville sustained serious injuries to his neck and shoulders and was rushed to hospital.

This after police were dispatched to the area where three men were involved in a fight at Melford Notshokovu Street, Lawaaikamp on Saturday afternoon, according to police.

Police spokesperson sergeant Christopher Spies said on arrival at the scene, the police officers came under attack and a scuffle broke out resulting in the serious injury of the sergeant.

“Information available at this stage indicates that police were dispatched to a scene where three men were involved in a fight. Upon arrival police came under attack and a scuffle ensued resulting in serious injury of the sergeant stationed at Conville SAPS.

"The suspect fled the scene on foot in the direction of Thembalethu where he was later arrested by reinforcements deployed in the area.

"The policeman sustained stab wounds to his shoulder and neck. He was transported to hospital where he is still receiving medical attention. His condition remains serious,” he said.

The 32-year-old suspect who was also hospitalised and later discharged, remains in police custody.

He is facing a charge of attempted murder and will appear in court this week.

“Circumstances surrounding an attack on a police official at Melford Notshokovu Street, Lawaaikamp, on Saturday are under investigation. Investigation into this matter is at a very early stage,” said Spies.
